HbA1c: Normal Range and What a High HbA1c Means

HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months, so it's a steadier picture than a single glucose reading. It's widely used to screen for and monitor diabetes.

Normal HbA1c range

Standard interpretation: normal below 5.7%, prediabetes 5.7–6.4%, diabetes 6.5% or higher. People with diabetes often aim for a target set with their doctor.

What a high HbA1c means

A higher HbA1c means your average sugar has been running high. In the prediabetes range it's a strong signal to act early, when changes are most effective.

Common causes:

What a low HbA1c means

A low HbA1c is usually fine, but in people on diabetes medicine it can indicate frequent low sugars worth reviewing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal HbA1c?

Below 5.7% is normal; 5.7–6.4% is prediabetes and 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes.

How quickly can HbA1c change?

Because it reflects 2–3 months of sugar, meaningful changes usually show over about 3 months of consistent diet and lifestyle change.

Not medical advice. This is general information. HbA1c results must be interpreted alongside your other results and history by a qualified doctor. Reference ranges vary by lab — use the range on your own report.
