Normal Hemoglobin Levels and What Low Hemoglobin Means

Hemoglobin (Hb) is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around your body. Low hemoglobin — anemia — is extremely common in India, especially among women, and often relates to iron intake.

Normal Hemoglobin range

Typical adult ranges are roughly: women 12–15 g/dL, men 13–17 g/dL. In pregnancy, 11 g/dL or above is generally considered adequate. Children's ranges differ. Use your report's own range.

What a high Hemoglobin means

A high hemoglobin is less common. It can follow dehydration, living at high altitude, smoking, or certain conditions.

Common causes:

What a low Hemoglobin means

Low hemoglobin (anemia) can cause tiredness, breathlessness, pale skin, dizziness and poor concentration. Iron deficiency is the most common cause, but it can also relate to vitamin B12/folate, blood loss (including heavy periods) or chronic illness.

Food & lifestyle that help

Favour

  • Leafy greens (spinach, mustard greens, methi)
  • Dal, beans and chana
  • Jaggery, dates and dried fruit
  • Fish, egg or meat if you eat them
  • Vitamin-C foods (guava, amla, lemon, orange) with meals to absorb iron

Limit

  • Tea and coffee right after meals (they reduce iron absorption)
  • Excess refined/junk food that crowds out nutritious meals

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if hemoglobin is well below the range, is dropping, or comes with significant tiredness, breathlessness or heavy bleeding — the underlying cause needs to be found, not just treated with supplements.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal hemoglobin level for women?

Roughly 12–15 g/dL for non-pregnant adult women, and about 11 g/dL or higher in pregnancy. Labs vary, so check your report's range.

Is 10 hemoglobin low?

Yes, 10 g/dL is below the normal range for adults and indicates mild-to-moderate anemia worth addressing with diet and a doctor's review.

How can I raise my hemoglobin quickly?

Eat iron-rich foods with vitamin C, avoid tea/coffee around meals, and treat the underlying cause. Significant anemia may need supplements prescribed by a doctor.

Not medical advice. This is general information. Hemoglobin results must be interpreted alongside your other results and history by a qualified doctor. Reference ranges vary by lab — use the range on your own report.
